Which is what I found out recently - luckily it means that all the episodes are available for watching.
David Attenborough’s narration along with the BBC production values make it impossible for me to watch a nature documentary that doesn’t involve these two names.
I’ve only watched two episodes so far but the other important detail in making this an awesome doc: the soundtrack. I think the music matches the picture incredbly well.

As of late, all of the BBC’s nature programs have been light hearted but man does Planet Earth remind me that nature can be savage at times.

I was horribly drunk while watching the first one and my brain nearly melted.

Apparently iPlayer has been testing it with 4K HDR, which must be pretty glorious: http://arstechnica.com/science/2016/12/bbc-planet-earth-ii-4k-uhd-drones/

I watched it on HD-DVD (that was bad decision I guess).

It was the first series that really made me interested in nature docs, but in doing so it made pretty much every other nature doc uninteresting to me.
